When we started doing a deep dive into our genealogy earlier this month, I wondered if I would find that I was really an Italian princess. My grandfather had been abandoned when his mother died in childbirth. I wondered what the situation was and what kind of people could abandon a baby like that (he would be abandoned twice by the age of 10 and left to fend for himself).

He was a very kind and resilient person who was able to live a happy and full life in spite of a challenging start, but we knew nothing about his family. It seemed like the natural place to begin my genealogical journey, and right away, I found direct connections to some of the 50 Sicilian armigerous families in his tree. I went straight to researching Sicilian nobility, and what I found will definitely surprise you (it sure surprised me).
