Mighty Mitochondria
The powerhouse of the cell may hold a critical key to longevity
Mitochondria are frequently referred to as the “powerhouse of the cell” for very good reason. They generate energy for all cellular functions by converting food into a usable form called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Mitochondria are essential for life and are present in nearly every cell, with their numbers varying according to the cell’s energy requirements. Their roles extend beyond energy production to include functions in immunity, cell signaling, and cell division. Recently, mitochondria have garnered growing interest from longevity researchers and may serve as a key target in the pursuit of increasing lifespan.
