Intrusive thoughts: Why they happen and how to deal with them - BBC Science  Focus Magazine

Many people experience unsettling and alarming thoughts that don't go away. These are called intrusive thoughts. Having these types of thoughts does not mean you will act on them, but they can cause anxiety and distress. Talking with a mental health professional can be helpful. They can teach you strategies that work, as well as help determine if you have an underlying condition.
